The club is run through a committee of volunteer members, a chair person, Secretary and assistants, Exhibition Secretary, Treasurer and assistant Librarian and two ordinary members who sit for one year before being re-elected or retired and replaced at the AGM. Some of the members have taken on extra responsibility of storing and looking after the exhibition stands and transporting them to and from the exhibitions. Our financial year runs from October to September.

Social Activities
We have an annual Christmas Party within the club, but the weekly meeting is very social in itself, with tea or coffee available halfway through the evening while members admire the work being produced on the night. Exhibitions provide time to socialise and catch up with events, as do the workshops and projects… What are you waiting for!?  Get your paintbrush and pencil ready and come join us for a relaxing evening of social sketching and painting.

Membership has averaged about 35 members over recent years covering a broad age range from 18-90 plus.  For an annual membership fee of £20 there is access to a wide range of artistic activities and social interaction. We are covered by insurance for participation in exhibitions and pay a small fee towards the costs of demonstrations by professional artists.

The club also supports charities such as Candlelighters, Heart Foundation and Yorkshire Air Ambulance by fundraising through raffles, sales of cards, artworks, books and materials and competition entries within the club.

New members are welcomed aged 18+.  We have wide ranging talents within the club and all learn from each other, demonstrations and workshops.  Work put forward for exhibitions is always of a very high standard from those participating.

There is a weekly programme of activities where a subject is set and members try to direct their talents to often new and challenging subjects. However, if the have work in progress they want to finish or they just fancy doing something of their own that’s no problem. We have had life drawing models, still life, collage and abstract. The programme also has about 6 demonstrations by professional artists throughout the year, all day workshops about twice a year and an internal competition and critique night. We have outdoor painting nights and venues around east Leeds, exhibitions and social evening (mainly the Christmas party).

We have had guided tours of the Leeds Art Gallery and Lotherton Hall.  We occasionally have auctions or sales of books and materials and have been involved in local projects or initiatives such as the Lotherton Hall project and Garforth Community College (Academy).

The Lotherton Hall project has been a wonderful, fascinating experience involving all members attending workshops in printing, Chinese painting techniques and drawing skills throughout the spring. It has challenged the ‘norm’ and brought about some intriguing and exciting works of art by our members. We have been offered the use of the eduction room for workshops either organised by ourselves or negotiated with the staff at the hall and will have the whole project on display on an interactive electronic table based at the hall.  This partnership is ongoing and we look forward to more exciting challenges.

Demonstrations are part of the timetable and take the form of professional Artists from around the North demonstrating techniques in watercolour, pastel, oil and mixed media on a range of specific genre, such as skies, water, tree, landscapes, cityscapes, wildlife and portraits. The artists often have their own work on display and related items for sale as well as their sponsor products at competitive prices.

The all day workshops again are by Professional Artists and have produced many a professional piece of work by members attending.  As many of our members have specific skills in certain aspects of producing work they have given well received demonstrations of their own to other members.

As a club we have regular exhibitions throughout the year at various venues. Some venues are outdoors so are affected by weather conditions but we are a steadfast bunch and are usually prepared for all events.  We currently exhibit at Temple Newsam, Lotherton Hall, Garforth Gala, Ledsham Fair and Garforth Community Hall. We have in the past had exhibitions at Garforth Library, Crossgates Library and Shopping Centre, Beningbrough Hall, York and Twaite Mills Leeds.

The club owns its own stands and has various ways to display paintings at its disposal. All paintings put forward for exhibitions are finished to a high standard, properly framed and hung. Loose work is shown in individual artist portfolios.

We also have a permanent display of 20 paintings in the Medical Centre in Garforth, which are change two or three times a year.  Many of our members also privately exhibit their paintings in London, Hull and Leeds.
